The Town Crier

Before she was 17 years old, Samantha Nichols new she would have a career in the newspaper business. She attended high school in Toldeo, Ohio, and worked part-time for the Toledo Chronicle in the Classified Advertising Department selling ads over the telephone. She was also a member of the yearbook staff at her high school. By the time graduatiin arrived, Samantha knew that journalism would be her major in college. No one was surprised when Samantha became editor of her college newspaper. After college she rejoined the Toledo Chronicle as a reporter covering the city beat and was also responsible for writing a weekly column called "bits and Pieces." Eventually Samantha's weekly column became so popular that it was syndicated in newspapers in several states. A syndicate sells articles or features for publication by many newspapers.The Towne Crier receives the bulk of its income from the sale of newspapers and from display and classified advertising. Display advertising is advertising that contains both art and words, and classified advertsing is located in the want ad section of a nespaper or other medium.

The Towne Crier is in the process of acquiring some up-to-date equipment that will reduce the amount of time needed to write the articles, plan the page layouts, and print the papaer, Employees include a managing editor, layout editor, city editor, graphic artist, press operator, bookkeeper, and reporters.

Samantha has decided to hire a manager to take over the day-to-day operations of the business and to oversee the financial management of the company. This will give her more time to work on her weekly column and recruit advertisers for the newspaper. The new manager will be expected to hire new employees, keep accurate cash and payroll records, and write correspondence. The manager will also be responsible for coordinating the work between the different departments of the business and handling daily transactions with other business.
